DEVELOPMENTS AT IQRAA TRUST

The year 2007 has been quite an eventful for Iqraa Trust. The year saw the Iqraa Trust move into new premises in International Plaza in Durban.

The year also saw the launch of the Iqraa Trust website (www.iqraatrust.org) which we hope to build into something which will not only keep you informed of developments at Iqraa Trust but which we hope will encourage you to join with us in our quest to make South Africa a better place of all South Africans.

In some ways this has also been a watershed year for Iqraa Trust in that we are starting to see the different strands of Iqraa Trust’s strategy come together as we strive to establish Iqraa Trust as a humanitarian organisation that will make a difference in the lives of the impoverished people in South Africa. The main focus of this strategy remains the empowerment of the disadvantaged and impoverished through facilitating access to education, training and health care.

PARTNERSHIPS AND PROJECTS

Foremost in the implementation of Iqraa Trust’s strategy has been the Trust’s approach of developing partnerships with different organisations in the implementation of different humanitarian projects. In this regard we have already partnered with other organisations, the more significant of these include the following:

More information on the above projects and other Iqraa Trust projects can be accessed through the Iqraa Trust website.

SUSTAINABILITY OF PROJECTS

A key concern with regard to many of the projects has been the issue of being able to sustain a project after it has been launched. In this regard it is important to note that the above projects and others have been designed so that it is possible for anyone to contribute to the project financially or in any other way thereby enhancing the sustainability of the project.

An interesting development with regard to sustainability has been the adoption of the concept of Waqf by Iqraa Trust. Similar in concept to a trust fund, a Waqf provides a simple yet effective vehicle for promoting the sustainability of projects particularly in the humanitarian field. This approach has already borne fruit for Iqraa Trust with the establishment of the Orphans Waqf Fund.

ORPHANS WAQF FUND

Iqraa Trust in partnership with Albaraka Bank and Islamic Relief Worldwide is in the process of establishing a Waqf that will contribute to meeting the needs of orphans and vulnerable children on an ongoing and sustainable basis. Only the income generated on the funds that are invested in the Orphans Waqf Fund will be used to support orphans. The Orphans Waqf Fund offers one the opportunity of benefiting from ones investment in perpetuity while contributing to meeting the needs of the most vulnerable in our society.

THE FUTURE

We have many new projects in the field of health. education and skills development that are currently under consideration. Many of these projects will require the cooperation of organisations, which have the necessary expertise, experience and resources.

Iqraa Trust is therefore very conscious of the need to network with other organisations It is hoped that through this it will be possible for Iqraa Trust to develop relationships with organisations with which the Trust can work to implement projects. It is also intended that networking will encourage cooperation between organisations and will lead ultimately to optimisation in the utilisation of resources. A further benefit of networking is that it would generate information on the different organisations that are operating in the humanitarian field, the scope and area of their activities and the type and location of projects which they are engaged in or have already completed. Plans to promote the kind of networking that will result in the above outcomes are already under consideration and will we hope come to fruition during the early part of 2008.
