EDUCATION PROJECT:
LAUNCH OF UNIQUE EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT PROGRAM FOR ORPHANS AND VULNERABLE CHILDREN IN PARTNERSHIP WITH eTHEKWINI MUNICIPALITY
DURBAN-KWAZULU NATAL- R 1,2 MILLION
Iqraa Trust is providing R 1,2 million over three years to finance the Educational Support Program in partnership with eThekwini municipality.
The Education Support Program was launched officially by the mayor of eThekwini Councillor Obed Mlaba on Monday, 31 March 2008.
The program makes it possible for students who would otherwise have not been able to further their academic studies to access education at a university or college.
Fifty five students, many of whom are orphans, are already on the program and are engaged in studies in fields as wide-ranging as medicine, nursing through to computer studies.
Over time the scheme will provide assistance to students wanting to acquire skills in the technical and vocational fields.
The establishment of the Educational Support Program is the result of the establishment of a unique partnership between the Iqraa Trust and the eThekwini Municipality. This is a unique program, which addresses the needs of the students on a wholistic basis providing funding for their studies whilst simultaneously providing for their other needs such as shelter, food and clothing.
